Emu Oil Benefits

The Benefits of Emu Oil are sometimes exaggerated but at the same time there is solid evidence for some of its therapeutic propertiesEmu Oil is most commonly used as an anti-inflammatory but is also taken as a dietary supplement.   Emu Oil is a good source of Omega 3,6 and 9 fatty acids and is also a rich source of Vitamin E and Vitamin A.  The anti-inflammatory properties of emu oil have been exploited since before Europeans arrived in Australia. The Aborigines new about the anti-inflammatory properties of emu oil and would wrap emu oil skin, with the subcutaneous fat attached, around injured parts of their bodies.

More recently, researchers have demonstrated the anti-inflammatory properties of emu oil in animal studies.  Why haven't there been any human clinical trials? No single part of the oil has been identified as the anti-inflammatory agent but rather the whole appears to be greater than the sum of its parts. Pharmaceutical companies can't patent a raw natural product like emu oil so there is no financial reward for very expensive human clinical trials.  As a result we have only animal studies and a mass of anecdotal evidence to support the case for emu oil.

Other studies of emu oil have demonstrated its ability as a dermal carrier.  That means that it can readily cross the skin barrier and can be used to transport other ingredients through the skin too.  This characteristic also contributes to the effectiveness of emu oil as a topical anti-inflammatory treatment.

Unfortunately, many people have made spurious claims about emu oil that have damaged its reputation as a therapeutic product.  Claims of curing skin cancers, Alzheimer’s and baldness have no scientific supporting evidence that I am aware of.  You should always beware of products that claim to be a cure for everything.  You should also ensure that any emu oil you buy is listed with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).  This means the product meets certain safety and quality guidelines and the product will have an AUSTL number on the front of its packaging.  This AUSTL number, however, will not ensure your product has good anti-inflammatory properties.

The anti-inflammatory properties of emu oil can be affected by a number of factors including: genetics of the birds, diet of the birds and, most importantly the rendering process of the oil.  Some manufacturers remove some of the solid fats from the emu oil in the rendering and filtering process to produce a “cleaner” and “clearer” looking oil.  Unfortunately this can also reduce the anti-inflammatory properties of the oil.  Ensure the oil you use is from a reputable supplier and that it is Pharmaceutical Grade Oil.

Do your own research.  If you have a condition where there is inflammatory discomfort (for example joint pain, arthritis, psoriasis, eczema, inflammatory bowel conditions) then Emu Oil may certainly help.  Additionally you will benefit from Emu Oils Omega 3,6 and 9 fatty acids, and its Vitamins A and E content.  Only Emu Products is a company that has been producing Pharmaceutical Grade Pure Emu oil of the highest quality for more than 15 years and is a trusted brand in Australia.   Only Emu Products guarantees that we use only the highest quality pharmaceutical Emu Oil in all of our products including our soaps, veterinary products and leather wax.
